Tofu
Meet Tofu! If you have been following our Instagram for a while, you probably know who Tofu is and a little bit about her story.
Tofu was one of our very first rescues. She was found in San Jose covered in mange and so depressed she could hardly lift her head. Over the months that followed and many medical baths later, her bubbly personality began to shine, and we all fell in love with her.
During the summer of last year, we noticed Tofu start to become increasingly reactive and territorial with dogs she didn’t know who came to the rescue. She remained fine with our dogs for a while but over the winter we then noticed her also becoming reactive with a few of ours, as well as a couple of people (usually wearing big hats, helmets, bikes, etc.) We met with a trainer who told us that the rescue, ironically, has become the worst place for her, and we need to get her out of CBD as soon as possible. He also said that training could be really beneficial for her to help reduce her territorial-ness and reactivity but that she needs a stable spot and person willing to put in time and work with her in order to start a training program.
Tofu has been bouncing between fosters and we are desperately searching for a long-term adopter or someone who could foster and do training with her.
On a personal note, I, Mackie, foster Tofu often. I have spent a lot of time with her. I can attest to the tangible difference in her behavior between being at home—in a calm, peaceful environment—as opposed to the rescue, which is bustling and barking for much of the day.
Tofu is so great in the home and keeps you very entertained with all of her silly quirks. She sleeps and lays around most of the day and is totally fine left on her own. She is fully potty trained, doesn’t destroy anything, and learned how to sit, shake, and lay down within about 20 minutes, which is a testament to how well she responds to training. She loves attention and being by your side but is a relatively low maintenance dog. She loves her morning and evening walks and is typically fine with dogs while walking, though we always keep her at a distance and on leash to be safe.
While I have seen Tofu develop friendships with dogs—and deeply with people—the ideal adopter for Tofu is someone without kids or other pets. And, as stated, someone who is willing to help baby girl Tofu with training and unlearning her territorial behavior. It must also be stated for transparency that Tofu has started dog fights and, very rarely, has also shown aggression towards a few people. Though we have seldom seen the latter, we know it must be said.
All that being said—Tofu is one of the most incredible dogs I have ever met. Truly, there has never been a dog that consistently makes me laugh as hard as she does. She is beyond weird and silly and loves her people with such fierce loyalty.
Finding an adult reactive Pitbull is no easy feat, but we hope that her perfect people are out there somewhere and ready to give her the life full of love that she deserves.
